The Power of Project Management
Recently, while teaching a Project Management course, someone mentioned “I don’t work on projects…I’m just here because I am curious.” Great! I enjoy having curious participants. However, let’s get back to your comment about “not working on projects.” Projects are all around us - at home, in the community, with your volunteer organization, at school and yes…at work. I would encourage you to take a deeper dive into the definition of a project which is “a temporary endeavor with a beginning and an end that produces a unique product service or result.” Now let’s check out some examples of projects - planning an annual event for the employees, scheduling a business trip, organizing a board meeting or All-Hands meeting for the staff, planning a vacation for your family, building a new deck, putting in a swimming pool, buying a new house, planning your wedding, getting a kid off to college, adopting a dog, organizing a donation event for your favorite charity…the list can go on and on. Because, like I mentioned earlier, projects are all around us. You may not use the term “project,” but if it meets the definition above then you have a project!
It’s for this reason that I am always encouraging people I meet to learn project management skills - whether you are in high school, college, trade school, or you work for a non-profit, library, winery, attorneys office, medical center, village or town government, retail, entertainment, public relations or advertising, investments or finance, real estate development or rentals…or any of the other various businesses that would benefit from having a standard, simple, project process that will help them elevate their level of success in delivering that unique product, service or result.
There are so many opportunities for you to be able to put project management skills to work! As an added note, project management skills are in high demand - globally. Wouldn’t now be an excellent time to consider pursuing project management and investing in your future. You in? You can do this.
