Project Based Learning…

Recently I heard an interview on Academic Minute with one of the researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) about the Project Based Learning (PBL) Week, that was underway at WPI. I was immediately drawn to the interview and some of the research that has been conducted by researchers, professors, and alumni of WPI. The week included different topics associated with the PBL program at WPI. I was most intrigued by the results of their research which included highlight the benefits of project based learning to the alumni:

  • 94% of survey respondents said their formal project experience at WPI enhance their ability to develop ideas.

  • 93% said that it enhanced their ability to effectively function on a team

  • 88% said that their projects contributed to the development of a stronger personal character.

You don’t have to be a WPI student, or alumnus, to understand the value of these skills and capabilities. This research from WPI confirms what we, in the project management community, already know - everyone benefits from learning project management skills. Everyone.

Projects are all around us. If you’re not currently working on a project of your own, or working with a project team, just hold on because you will be soon! The future of work will be aligned with project based activities - new product development, construction, technology, health care, marketing, event management, engineering, learning & development, libraries, law firms, retail, telcom, insurance, law enforcement, school systems, hospitality…you can find projects everywhere.

As a Project Manager, I am very excited about the level of interest in a field that I have worked in for many years. As an author, coach, trainer, and consultant, I am thrilled with all the opportunities to share the power of project management with my audience!
